Every thirty-two seconds,
a child in America experiences his or her parent’s divorce.
Today with the divorce rate around 50 percent for more than 30 years,
two generations of children have experienced divorce as a “way
of life.” Unresolved chronic conflict between parents has
been shown to have negative effects on their children for the rest
of their lives. Parental conflict is more closely associated with
children’s problems than any other problem in distressed families.
Some studies indicate that parental conflict predicts a child’s
behavior problems.
There is a Better Way
Most children are resilient,
and many even thrive if the adults are willing to assume the responsibility
associated with learning to work together cooperatively as parents
and adults. Children need to know that they will continue to be
loved and nurtured by both of their parents—even under separate
roofs. The family is still their family whether everyone lives in
one home or two. Many people need help in learning to separate issues
that belong to the adults from the needs of the children. How do
we put this understanding into practice?
